In recognition of the role of research in learning and development, the Federal Government on Thursday secured $4 million Ebscohost E-content facility for Nigerian universities.
The facility is expected to enhance the work of Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN) for wider research undertakings in the nation’s higher institutions of learning that will benefit from the scheme.
The Ebscohost E-content is secured by NgREN, established to provide an elaborate infrastructural backbone to interconnect all research and education institutions in Nigeria and link them with other research and education networks worldwide.
Julius Okojie, executive secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), at the event on Thursday in Abuja, said: “NgREN has secured access to all Ebscohost e-books collections and seven Ebscohost research databases among which are full text e-journals, periodicals and magazines of several academic disciplines and professionals specialisation.
“These resources contain more than 100,000 high quality e-book titles, 27,100 full text journals, 18,430 indexed and abstracted journals, 9,041,400 searchables cited references daily updates and 630 videos with transcripts and related articles valued at $4 million.
“We are now at the second phase of the NgREN development, and I must say here that the Federal Government has graciously approved N1 billion to improve the facilities. We would keep improving to deepen national and international networks and share resources.
“We are hoping that after the meeting in Las Vegas, we would be able to establish stronger links with Nigerian Diasporans to access their teachings as we beef up our facilities.”
Education experts said this would grow the number of available resources in the nation’s university libraries, and as a result heighten research activities among institutions in Nigerian university system.
