Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will miss Sunday’s crucial Premier League fixture against Manchester United after being admitted to hospital.
The 47-year-old, who led Newcastle to a historic League Cup triumph last month, was taken into the hospital on Friday evening after feeling unwell for several days. In an official statement, the club confirmed that Howe is conscious and speaking with his family as he undergoes further medical tests.
“The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening, having felt unwell for several days,” the statement read.
“Medical staff kept Eddie in the hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery.”
Tindall and Jones to lead Newcastle against United
In Howe’s absence, assistant manager Jason Tindall and first-team coach Graeme Jones will oversee the team for Sunday’s high-stakes encounter with Manchester United — a match pivotal to Newcastle’s hopes of securing a Champions League place next season.
The Magpies currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, but with two games in hand, they could rise as high as third. Thanks to England’s strong showing in European competitions this season, a top-five finish will be enough to earn a Champions League spot.
Howe’s impact at Newcastle
Since his appointment in November 2021, Amersham-born Howe has overseen a remarkable transformation at St. James’ Park. Under his guidance, Newcastle finished 11th and fourth. They are currently seventh in the Premier League across three seasons. He has taken charge of 165 matches in all competitions, recording 84 wins, 36 draws, and 45 defeats.
The Magpies also enjoyed a memorable night under Howe’s leadership when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League, though they ultimately missed out on the knockout rounds.
Howe’s managerial career
Howe’s managerial career began with Bournemouth, where he had two successful stints, interrupted by a brief spell at Burnley.
Widely respected for his tactical acumen and leadership, Howe has often been mentioned as a potential future England manager. However, he revealed he was not interviewed for the role, which eventually went to Thomas Tuchel last October.
