Corona School Trust Council has showcased academic excellence with its annual inter-school quiz competition that brought together pupils from its Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Gbagada, Lekki and other campuses.
It was a day of intellectual challenge, cultural presentations, and demonstrations of global-standard learning. The event, held at the school’s Victoria Island campus, featured questions on science, social studies, and geography, alongside presentations aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The competition opened with a welcome address by Funmilola Olorunishola, Head of School, Corona Ikoyi, before quiz questions were delivered by Greg Okonji, who moderated the academic rounds designed to test students’ depth of knowledge and critical-thinking skills.
A highlight of the event was a presentation by a student from Corona Victoria Island, who spoke on SDG 4—the global commitment to ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all. His presentation emphasized the goal’s focus on free primary and secondary education, equal access to higher and technical learning, and eliminating gender disparities in classrooms.
In another segment, another student from Corona Gbagada, engaged the audience with insightful questions on Nigeria’s diverse cultural festivals. Students from the Ikoyi campus also delivered a cultural performance celebrating the cultures of Akwa Ibom State, adding a vibrant creative dimension to the event.
Announcing the results across academic, creative, and innovation categories, Adetokun Martins, Head of School, Corona Victoria Island, commended all participating students for their excellence and discipline. According to her, the competition is designed not only to reward academic achievement, but also to reinforce confidence, public speaking, teamwork, and creativity among pupils.
Christie Yellowe, the school’s Human Resource Manager, said the most remarkable takeaway from this year’s competition was the strong spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by the students.
“Nobody saw themselves as a loser. Every child showed confidence and composure,” she said, adding, “the ability to accept any position with grace is a global skill. These children have embraced that spirit, proving that we are raising world-class learners ready to compete anywhere in the world.”
Yellowe emphasized that Corona’s extra-curricular and co-curricular programmes are intentionally designed to shape well-rounded students who can excel in academics, technology, sports, and global competitions. She noted that long before the COVID-19 pandemic, Corona had already invested heavily in educational technology, enabling a seamless transition to online learning when global lockdowns began.
She added that Corona students consistently perform exceptionally well at World School Games and similar international competitions, often returning with medals and awards due to the strength of the school’s curriculum.
Addressing questions on global competitiveness, Yellowe explained that the Trust Council continually benchmarks its academic and extracurricular practices against international standards to ensure students remain aligned with emerging global trends, including advancements in artificial intelligence.
She noted that the quality of infrastructure across all Corona campuses remains uniform due to central management, ensuring parents experience no disparity when transferring children between schools.
The highlight of the inter-school quiz was the celebrations and commendations for students across all categories, marking yet another year of academic excellence and character development within the Corona School community.
