The Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE), the Nigerian affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) USA, will review energy access across African countries and within specific countries and investigate the factors impacting on energy access at its forthcoming conference.
The 7th annual NAEE/IAEE international conference, which is slated for February 16-18, 2014 in Abuja, will also proffer technological, economic, legal and institutional options, among others for boosting energy access in Africa.
The conference, with the theme “Energy Access and Economic Development: Policies, Institutional Framework and Strategic Options”, will attract delegates from within and outside Nigeria.
Adeola Adenikinju, president, NAEE and chairman Conference Planning Committee, in a statement, said the theme is reflective of the importance of energy access to the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals and the aspirations of Sub Saharan African countries to achieve massive reduction in unemployment, poverty and to boost social and economic development across the continent and thereby bridge the gap between the Africa continent and other parts of the world.
“The outcome of the conference will help African leaders and policy makers to develop the policy and institutional frameworks, incentives and other measures that will allow the continent to catch up with other parts of the world. This is critical for long term sustainable development of the peoples living in the continent,” he added.
The 2014 conference will be chaired by Soji Adelaja, Hannah Distinguished Professor of Land Economics, Michigan State University, USA and a special adviser to the President. The keynote address will be delivered by Yinka Omorogbe, the Nabo Graham Douglas Distinguished Professor of Law, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced and Legal Studies (NIALS), Abuja.
The conference will be formally open by the Chinedu Nebo, minister of power.
