Abimbola Akinkugbe, MD/CEO of EcoBuild, a subsidiary of Moulding Technologies Limited (MTL), has championed the adoption of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) materials in the building industry to deliver cost-effective and sustainable housing solutions.
“The potential of polystyrene to deliver cost-effective, rapid, and sustainable housing solutions is immense. We’re not just manufacturing materials; we are providing a tangible pathway to dignified living for countless Nigerians,” Akinkugbe said.
According to her, EcoBuild’s goal is to make quality housing achievable, not just a distant dream for Nigerians seeking to own a home of their own. She stated that the company is spearheading a quiet revolution in construction, driven by commitment to tackle Nigeria’s persistent housing deficit.
She disclosed that her journey in manufacturing is rooted in a firm belief in EPS’s potential to deliver accessible and sustainable homes. Her dedication to ‘Eco-Build’ principles and affordable housing that truly defines her mission, while MTL is renowned for its high-quality EPS Blocks and custom moulds, used in diverse applications from intricate architectural details to robust structural components.
She said that the lightweight and easy-to-handle nature of EPS materials is reducing project timelines by an estimated 30-50 percent and significantly cutting construction costs by as much as 25 percent.
According to her, EPS adoption is proving that affordability does not compromise quality or durability, and added that the rapid uptake has already seen Mowe Golf Town, Phase 1 development completely sold out, underscoring strong market validation.
“This vision is demonstrably taking shape in Mowe Golf Town, where EcoBuild by MTL is instrumental in a significant 100-unit housing project. By leveraging EPS, these bungalows are designed for rapid construction and superior thermal insulation, ensuring comfort and long-term energy efficiency for residents,” Akinkugbe said.
Akinkugbe firmly believes that scaling this success requires strategic collaboration. Her ambition extends beyond individual projects; she envisions replicating the Mowe Golf Town model nationwide through partnerships, particularly with the Nigerian government. “Bridging the housing gap requires a concerted, multi-stakeholder effort.
“Our polystyrene technology offers a proven, scalable solution. By partnering with governmental initiatives, we can unlock the potential to provide millions of Nigerians with truly affordable, yet high-quality and sustainable, homes,” Akinkugbe said.
As a woman leading a major manufacturing venture in a traditionally male-dominated space, Akinkugbe’s journey adds another dimension to her narrative. She exemplifies how innovation, coupled with a deep understanding of local needs and a commitment to sustainability, can reshape an entire industry. “Being a woman in this industry sometimes means navigating unique challenges, but it also fuels my drive to demonstrate what’s possible and inspire others,” she said.
As Moulding Technologies Limited continues to expand its reach, Akinkugbe’s vision for a Nigeria where every family can afford a safe and comfortable home built with cutting-edge, sustainable materials moves closer to becoming a widespread reality.
