President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) has called on the national assembly to as soon as possible pass the audit bill into law to enhance transparency and accountability across all the (MDAs) of the federal government.
He said the bill is critical inorder to guarantee the independence of the office of the Auditor General of the Federation and ensure effectiveness across all the (MDAs) in the country.
Represented by the minister of finance, Kemi Adoesun the President made the call on Thursday during the launch of the 2017- 2022 strategic development plan in Abuja.
The president said that the audit bill is a key to national development while serving as the instrument to curb menace in all public sectors.
He said that the 2017-2022 strategic development plan is a tool for functional operation in public offices, and that it would enhance financial independent as well as free the Audit office from external influence and indirect control.
Buhari assured that his administration is committed to building a future for Nigerians, vowing that he would not relent effort in tackling corruption across the country.
He equally assured that the federal government is working hard in building institutions across the country to enhance effectiveness and economic growth.
In his remark, the chairman senate committee on Public Account Committee, Emmanuel Uba assured that the as soon as the resume seating would judiciously pass the audit bill.
Uba who was represented by the public account committee member, Yahaya Abdulahi, stressed that the committee would partner with the Office of Auditor General for the Federation, adding that the goals and objectives if the plan must be realized.
However, he said that the committee would set up a conference committee to deepen more effort in ensuring that the audit bill is pass into law.
Also speaking at the event, the chairman House of Representatives on public account committee, Rimamnde Kwewum lamented that institutions across the federation are not well strengthened due to lack of legal backing.
He revealed that the house has passed the audit bill, and that the senate is working assiduously to ensure its passage to enhance transparency and efficiency in governance.
The Auditor General Of the Federation Anthony Ayine said due to lack of legal back up in the institution, he disclosed that the Audit office has failed in ensuring that resources is well manage as well as service delivery.
He also noted that the major impediments to the nation’s progress is poor governance, wastes, inefficiency poor accountability and lack of transparency.
