Federal Government has earmarked 285 million in the 2017 fiscal year for flood and grass control at the Hadejia Valley project, Ubali Shittu, representing Jigawa North said.
He made the disclosure at a town hall meeting on Thursday in Hadejia.
Shittu said N100 million was for the control of the ravaging typher grass on the river, while N160 million was for construction of drains in flood-prone communities.
He added that N25 million was earmarked for the construction of channels to ease the flow of water to farms and for domestic use.
He explained that “the projects are to control perennial flooding due to blockage of the river by grass and to encourage irrigation activities.”
The lawmaker also said that government would provide four solar motorised boreholes and reservoirs each at Hadejia, Kafinhausa and Malammadori.
He noted that additional 50 medium-size solar motorise boreholes would be provided, while 150 obsolete hand pumps would be repaired in the communities.
Shittu said a refuse evacuation truck would be provided to facilitate effective waste management in major towns in the areas. The senator explained that the gesture was to enhance sanitation and access to safe drinking water in rural communities.
According to him, the projects have been captured in the 2017 budget under the senatorial constituency project.
He commended the Jigawa Government for executing road projects to open up the state, and urged the people to support government policies and programmes, “to achieve sustainable social and economic development in the state and the country.”
