The Senate on Thursday received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking confirmation of the appointment of chairman and commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the letter read on the floor of the Senate by Senate president, Bukola Saraki, the President requested the Senate to confirm Mahmud Yakubu as chairman of the electoral body as well as Amina Zakari,  Anthonia Okosi, Baba Shettima, Muhammadu Lekki, and Soyebi Solomon, as commissioners, respectively.

The Council of State had earlier approved Yakubu’s appointment at an emergency meeting on Wednesday.

The Senate also received two fresh petitions challenging the ministerial nomination of Aisha Ibrahim from Sokoto State.

The Senate Committee of Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions had earlier thrown out a petition against her, on the grounds that it was not properly addressed to the Senate president.
