Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, is reportedly dead.
Though no official statement has been released by the Ijebu traditional council or the Ogun State government, multiple credible sources, including a presidential aide and palace insiders, have confirmed the first-class monarch’s passing.
Temitope Ajayi, the senior special assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, made a cryptic post on his Facebook page on Sunday, hinting at the monarch’s death. He wrote:“It is not just raining today. It is pouring. Awujale… It is well!”
A source within the Awujale’s palace, who spoke to BusinessDay on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the development but said an official announcement would be made soon.
The news comes just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari was announced, making it a somber day of national mourning.
Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, is one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs and a revered figure in Yoruba land.
