Nigerian gender advocate Omowumi Ogunrotimi named 2025 Global Citizen Prize winner

Nigerian lawyer and gender advocate Omowumi Ogunrotimi has been honoured as one of the recipients of the prestigious 2025 Global Citizen Prize for her groundbreaking work in combating gender-based violence.
Ogunrotimi, founder of Gender Mobile Initiative, joins fellow honourees Valeriia Rachynska (Ukraine), Taily Terena (Brazil), and Lydia Amenyaglo (Ghana). This distinguished recognition comes from Global Citizen, the world’s leading international advocacy organisation dedicated to ending extreme poverty.
The awards celebrate young leaders taking decisive action to address climate change, dismantle systemic barriers, empower girls, and champion positive change worldwide. As part of their recognition, the recipients will receive a year-long support programme from Global Citizen along with a cash grant for their organisations.

The awards will be presented at a summit in New York City on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. The event will feature prominent attendees, including United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Sarah, Duchess of York, science educator and Global Citizen Ambassador Bill Nye, and Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board, among other world leaders.
A self-described “fearless feminist lawyer,” Ogunrotimi has spent over a decade advocating for gender equality in Nigeria. Through her persistent efforts, sexual violence policies have been adopted in 22 states and more than 150 universities across the country. Her advocacy was also instrumental in passing the Sexual Harassment Bill in tertiary institutions at the Federal House of Representatives.
An Ashoka Fellow and recipient of multiple awards, Ogunrotimi continues her dedicated mission to eradicate gender inequality through legal reforms and community empowerment, inspiring others to demand justice and social change throughout Nigeria and beyond.
