Sterling Bank Plc has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with some firms in the education sector to digitise and simplify learning process at all levels of education.

In statement on Friday in Lagos, the bank said the partnership was to make learning solutions affordable for students in primary, secondary and tertiary education levels.

According to the bank, some of the partners include HR & P Solutions, Netlibrary Nigeria Ltd., QC-Investment Ltd. and DFID-Deepen Programme. It quoted the bank’s Executive Director, Abubakar Suleiman, as restating that the fundamental to the progress of any nation was education. It said the objective of the initiative was to transform education and make people to want to invest in education.

Besides, it said the initiative was for start-up companies to see education as where there was a clear demand.

The statement added: ”The idea is to digitise all the educational contents and make it cheaper for the students to afford.” ”We are to develop devices that will provide digital solutions for students and we also recognise that the government does not have the resources.”

”There is nowhere in the world where the government provides all the needs of the society.” ”So, it is clear that at some point, financial intermediation is required.”

The statement said that the bank had looked at its partners with the same desire because most of them had adopted the advantage of modern technology. It noted that the initiative was not charity because Sterling Bank is not a charity organisation, neither is any of the partners.

According to the statement, the intention is not sustainable unless there is a sound economic logic behind it.

”So, whatever we are doing is to make sure that five years from now, this partnership is something that is still ongoing.”

”It is not one of those projects that works for a year and disappears.”

”We are competing against the past. The past has not worked, but it is still holding the educational system hostage.”

”We need to transform the mind-set of everybody involved in the education system to see what the future holds.”

”It is not in the best interest of the country that majority of our future leaders are educated outside the country.”

”So, there is need for us to change our educational system, so that our children are educated here.”
