How BCAN promotes good banking culture among customers

Bank Customers Association of Nigeria (BCAN), a consumer-protection focused organisation that recognises the inter-dependence between providers and consumers of banking services, has been launched in Lagos.

The Association seeks to promote good banking culture and habits among bank customers as well as mutual understanding, trust, confidence with their customers. It most importantly aims at protecting the rights and interest of its members.

Speaking at BCAN stakeholders meeting held at the Bankers House in Lagos, Uju M. Ogubunka, president, BCAN, stressed the need for the operators as well as regulators in the banking industry in Nigeria to co-operate, collaborate and indeed, partner to build the banking industry of their dream.

“There is no gainsaying that this is necessary for the attainment of the much expected inclusive finance for the benefit of the citizenry and the growth of the economy,” he said.

BCAN is an incorporated trustee and a not-for-profit organisation, which one of its objectives is to educate the Nigerian public on the advantages inherent in the operations of efficient banking policies and the need to develop a healthy banking culture.

Membership of the Association is by voluntary registration and open to individuals and corporate organisations that maintain or intend to maintain any form of bank account or banking relationship with any bank incorporated in Nigeria and licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. It is also open to public and private limited liability companies, corporations, parastatals, sole proprietors, non-governmental organisations, unions, associations, partnerships, among others.

There are standing committees such as membership committee, education and public enlightenment committee, research and advocacy committee, programmes committee, dispute resolution committee and finance committee to ensure members’ participation and contributions.
