Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged his players to learn how to finish matches more convincingly after reclaiming top spot in the Premier League with a 1–0 victory at Everton.
Viktor Gyokeres scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot, ending his goal drought with his first strike since November 1 as the Gunners moved two points clear of Manchester City at the summit.
However, after needing a stoppage-time own goal to beat bottom-side Wolves last weekend, Arteta was once again made to endure a nervy finish over 96 minutes at Goodison Park against a depleted Everton side.
The Toffees posed little attacking threat but had strong appeals for a penalty turned down in the second half when William Saliba challenged Thierno Barry.
“The margin should have been bigger,” Arteta said. “We have to learn while we are winning.”
It marks the third time in four years that Arsenal will sit top of the table on Christmas Day. On the previous two occasions, however, they were eventually overhauled by Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side have now won seven consecutive matches in all competitions, cutting into what was once a seven-point gap at the top of the table.
Despite that, Arteta praised his players’ consistency as they continue to push for a first league title in 22 years.
“It gives me belief and confidence in the performances and the consistency of the team,” Arteta told AFP.
“That is very difficult to do in this league, and it shows the team is constantly there.”
