Arsenal has confirmed the appointment of former Atletico Madrid executive Andrea Berta as the club’s new sporting director on Sunday.
The 53-year-old Italian, who departed Atletico Madrid in January after a 12-year tenure, succeeds former Arsenal midfielder Edu in the role.
Edu left Arsenal in November to join Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis’ stable of clubs, including Nottingham Forest, Olympiakos, and Rio Ave.

Berta, with a background in banking, held positions with Italian clubs Parma and Genoa before joining Atletico Madrid as technical director in 2013.
During his time at Atletico, the club won two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.
“I am delighted to be joining Arsenal in what is a hugely exciting period for the club,” Berta said as reported by Arsenal’s official website.
“I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone into re-establishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world.
“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my part in shaping a successful future with a great team.”
Berta faces a busy summer, with Arsenal expected to finish second in the Premier League for the third consecutive season. A key task will be addressing the need for a prolific striker to bolster their title ambitions.
Additionally, Berta will oversee key contract renewal negotiations with players such as Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Gabriel Martinelli, all of whom have just over two years remaining on their current deals.
Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke welcomed Berta’s arrival, saying, “Andrea will be a great addition to our club. He understands our values and what we stand for, and we have no doubt he will help us push on and take the next steps in our bid to win major trophies.”
