A majority of Americans now say they endorse the decision taken by the Democrat controlled House of Representatives to begin an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump and nearly half of all adults also say they want the House to go on to recommend the removal of the president from office.
According to a new Washington Post-Schar poll, public opinion in America has shifted considerably against the beleaguered president as information has been released about Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukrainian officials to undertake investigation into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
Previous polls taken at different times in the past had found that majorities of Americans opposed the impeachment, with only 37-41 per cent saying they were in favour.
However, it would seem recent damning revelations of Trump’s desperate attempts to get a foreign government to interfere in the US elections have prompted more Americans to turn against their president.
The new poll finds that 58% of Americans say the House was right to launch the impeachment investigations against the president with 38% still against the move.
Among all adults, 49% say the House should take the more serious step to impeach Trump.
