The American Embassy and Microsoft Nigeria have jointly empowered and trained no fewer than 2,000 Secondary school teachers in Ogun state public schools, taking them through several courses meant to boost effective teaching technique and teachers’ proficiency in Information Technology (IT) in schools.
The effective teaching technique and teachers’ proficiency training with the use of communication technology for the advancement of secondary school education was conducted for 2,000 teachers by the American Embassy and Microsoft Nigeria in conjunction with Ogun State Teaching Service Commission.
Declaring open the Workshop in Abeokuta on Thursday, Governor Ibikunle Amosun represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, underscored the need to acquaint teachers with the essentials of Information and Communication Technology to enhance efficiency and productivity towards improving the standard of education in the state.
Speaking on the theme of the Workshop, ‘’Teach Right; Developing Educators’ Professional Competencies in Ogun State Public Schools’’, Governor Amosun said it was high time government improved on teaching methodology and professionalism among Secondary School teachers so as to align them with new trends in the teaching profession for better results.
He said, “On our own, we regularly organise training and re-training programme for our entire workforce to improve on their professionalism and enhance productivity. I must state that all genuine efforts are directed towards improving on the present quality of human capital resources.”
He urged participants to be more innovative and grasp the needed skills at solving basic challenges in their day-to-day teaching and learning in the classrooms and beyond, adding that the programme was strategically organised to improve teaching skills among teachers, and boost learning abilities of students.
Earlier, Olabosipo Ogunsan, Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), said the major objective of the programme was to set a platform for local, regional and global collaboration between teachers in the State and their counterparts the world over through a robust online educators’ community provided by Microsoft.
Ogunsan said this was a systematic and organised process of applying modern technology to improve the quality of education which would in turn ensure improved performance of students, just as Olurinola Olukemi, Deputy Education Programmes Manager added that the training would make teachers in the state to be at par with their colleagues in other parts of the world.
