Olubunmi Kuku the managing director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has debunked claims made by Edward Boyo, the founder and CEO of Overland Airways that Nigerian airports are not insured.
Boyo who spoke on Tuesday during the 5th CHINET Aviacargo Conference at the 21st Akwaaba African Travel Market at Eko Hotel, Lagos had said that FAAN’s failure to insure airports across the country has had a detrimental impact on domestic airline operations.
Boyo urged the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to engage with the relevant authorities to ensure that all airports in Nigeria are properly insured, lamenting that poor airport infrastructure has resulted in significant damage to aircraft, with airlines bearing the financial burden.

In response, Kuku in a statement on Wednesday said that all federal government’s airports managed by FAAN are insured with the insurance up to date.
“Derubberization and runway hygiene has been intact; records are available. Only area I would concur are habitation and community issues that have impacted the wildlife/bird strikes and we have been working closely with relevant stakeholders to control,” she stated.
According to Kuku, the historical runway issues based on structural and engineering issues on some of the runways along with those exceeding their lifespan are being corrected gradually with complete overhauls and maintenance.
