For African companies hoping to leapfrog development and cement their place in the global economy, AI offers a chance to rewrite the script. From financial services in Lagos to agritech ventures in Nairobi, AI is transforming how we operate, make decisions, and create value. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: this powerful force isn’t neutral. When left unchecked, it can discriminate, exclude, and undermine the very progress it promises. For board directors across Africa, this is not a technical glitch to be outsourced to the IT team, it’s a governance imperative that demands immediate attention at the highest level.
AI systems are only as fair as the data they consume and the humans who design them. Algorithmic bias occurs when these systems trained on historical data reflecting societal inequalities produce outcomes that are systematically skewed against certain groups. In practice, that could mean a loan application rejected because of racial bias embedded in past credit decisions, or a recruitment algorithm that favors male candidates because historical hires skewed that way. These outcomes are not just morally indefensible, they’re legally risky, reputationally damaging, and commercially unsustainable.

If AI tools are trained primarily on data sets from the Global North, the result could be models that simply do not understand our local realities. The result? Decisions made at scale that marginalise communities, misprice risk, or overlook talent. Directors must ask themselves: are we importing digital tools that undermine our own development objectives?
The ethical oversight of AI cannot be left to chance or to junior compliance officers. Boards must lead. That means putting in place governance structures that demand transparency, fairness, and accountability at every stage of the AI lifecycle. It’s about knowing which questions to ask and making sound judgments based on the answers. What data was used to train our models? Who validated it? Do our AI tools undergo bias testing? Is there human oversight before decisions are final? If no one around the boardroom table is asking these questions, then the board is abdicating its duty.

A financial algorithm that denies credit to female entrepreneurs based on skewed historical data will entrench gender disparities, not solve them. These are not theoretical risks. They are already playing out globally, and Africa is not exempt.
Moreover, there is a growing regulatory wave that boards cannot afford to ignore. The European Union’s AI Act likely to influence global norms mandates stringent risk categorisation, transparency, and accountability for AI systems. African regulators are beginning to follow suit, with countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana developing AI strategies that emphasise ethical use. Boards must anticipate these shifts, not react to them. This means demanding from management not only technical audits but also impact assessments that examine how AI systems affect people across race, gender, geography, and income lines.
Boardroom oversight should also extend to third-party vendors. Too often, AI is embedded in software bought off the shelf, with little interrogation of how it works or whether it is appropriate for African users. Directors must insist that procurement policies include ethical due diligence, and that contracts with AI vendors include provisions for bias audits, data transparency, and remediation mechanisms.
And let’s not forget the bottom line: businesses that fail to detect and correct algorithmic bias will lose consumer trust, face lawsuits, and find themselves excluded from ethical investment funds. In a world where social license is as critical as financial capital, governance lapses in AI can become existential threats. African consumers are increasingly digitally savvy and socially aware; they will reward companies that respect their rights and penalize those that don’t.
AI is here. The question is not whether your organisation will use it, but whether it will use it wisely. And that wisdom must begin in the boardroom. Directors are not spectators in this technological revolution; they are stewards. It’s time to lead with courage, ask uncomfortable questions, and demand ethical clarity.
