Airtel Nigeria, a member of Airtel Africa Group, has paid out claims to its insurance beneficiaries under the Free Insurance Plan initiated by the company.
The plan, which is the first of its kind in Africa most populous and largest economy Nigeria, has been meeting the health needs of its teeming customers, BusinessDay investigation reveals.
Emiowei Bridget, a Lagos-based business woman, said she came across the product through television commercials and series of messages on her phone. She was sick with malaria that culminates in high blood pressure and Airtel Insurance helped settle some of her medical expenses.
“Airtel insurance helped me to pay some of my bills and I m glad because it took some pressure off my hospital bills,” she said, while responding to questions at the company’s office in IIupeju, Lagos.
Asked whether it was easy for her to access her claim she said “It was very easy, I got an SMS telling me l had won some money for hospital cover. I was scanned and two days later I got another call telling me that my cheque will soon be ready”

It will be recalled that Airtel Nigeria in collaboration with MicroEnsure and Cornerstone Insurance plc, two prominent insurance providers, to launch a free insurance product which offers its customers life and hospitalisation insurance with increasing benefits based on monthly airtime recharge.
The product, which is tagged Airtel Insurance is packaged to deliver affordable insurance services and encourage insurance culture among Nigerians. It is the first of its kind in Nigeria and has been endorsed by the National Insurance Communication (NAICOM). It is open to all Nigeria residents between the ages of 18 and 65 years. All they need to do is to dial *259#.
Also, all hospitalisation are covered, both for natural and accidental causes, with no medical exclusions, making it the most widely accessible and generous free insurance cover in the country.
An elated trader at the Dopemu Market, Agege Lagos, described how easy and convenient Airtel Insurance is. “I received a message from Airtel Insurance that I’ve qualified for the cover. I got my cheque 72 hours after submitting my document and verification of my claim.”
