Ebere Christopher, fashion designer and founder of Bibi Christopher, has said that Africa’s rich storytelling heritage is a driving force shaping the global fashion industry.
She made this known in a statement recently while stating the importance of cultural narratives in preserving African heritage and elevating the continent’s fashion industry globally.
“Fashion becomes more powerful when it carries meaning, and that is what storytelling achieves. In Africa, our textiles, patterns, and techniques are not random,” Christopher said.
“They speak of our history, our values, and our identity. When I create a piece, I see it as more than clothing. It is a narrative, a connection to heritage that is shared with the world,” she explained.
She added that the growing global demand for authenticity has strengthened appreciation for African fashion, transforming garments into experiences that are “not just admired but deeply respected.”
Christopher also highlighted her commitment to sustainability and ethical practices, stressing that true luxury must be both elegant and responsible.

“Sustainability is not optional. It is a responsibility. From sourcing fabrics thoughtfully to ensuring precision in production and fair practices for artisans, every step reflects respect for people and the planet,” she said.

“When a well-known figure chooses African fashion, it creates visibility that cannot be ignored,” she noted, adding that runway showcases help African brands stand “not as an alternative but as an equal” among global luxury labels.
Christopher also addressed the challenges of scaling globally, citing logistics, international trade regulations, and financing growth as hurdles.
“Ensuring that pieces arrive on time and in perfect condition requires dependable partners, while increasing production to meet global demand must never compromise quality,” she said.
