Students at the University of Pretoria (UP), South Africa have held a vigil in condemnation of the xenophobic attacks launched against Nigerians in the country.
The two-hour vigil held at the amphitheatre of the university had different African nationals singing in a mournful tone against the killings birth by the clash.
At about 2:41pm, the students took the protests to the streets, demanding that actions be taken.
The Nigerian Students Society of UP also condemned the recent attacks in a statement calling on the authorities to bring solutions to the problem. The student body frowned against any form of violence and elements of criminality that diminishes the existence of humankind.
It stressed that as African nationals, they are humans as any other; they are citizens of the world who are great scholars, academics, innovators and leaders.
“Being a foreigner, international student in one South African prestigious and world-renowned institution of learning, shows the credulity of greatness to drive the growth of Africa,” the statement said.
“Nigerians are peace-loving, industrious and hardworking people bringing a vast wealth of knowledge, prosperity and love in every society we find ourselves. We do not support any form of crime and stand for justice and will continue to abide by the laws of the Republic of South Africa and those of any country in the world.”
