South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday he is in talks with a U.S. trade representative to reduce tariffs levied by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“We want tariffs that President Trump is seeking to levy on us and has already started, to be reduced,” said Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, at a New York event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations.

“We are now involved in negotiations with the United States Trade Representative to see the extent to which we can reduce that.”

Ramaphosa also said the African Growth Opportunity Act treaty should continue.
