Mayor Dele Osinowo, the executive chairman of Agboyi-Ketu local council development area (LCDA) has build and commission a modern market with over 340 shops, built through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.
The modern market is named after Babatunde Braimoh, the late lawmaker and political leader who died as a representative of the constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The market was commissioned by the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Osinowo also built and commissioned the Thomas Laniyan road, Okubadejo road, Abayomi Owoade road, and the Stephen Oyedele Sports and Recreational Centre to the council area.
In addition to the market, the council delivered three roads with a network of about 1.750km and the Stephen Oyedele Sports and Recreational Centre.
Oshinowo revealed that the council has a total of 24 projects to commission, with five projects delivered on this day.
The commissioning of the projects is coming just when he Oshinowo’s tenure as Agboyi-Ketu LCDA chairman draws to a close,
These are part of the 24 legacy projects his administration plans to commission, reaffirming his commitment to delivering lasting infrastructure and community development.
The Babatunde Braimoh Model Market, a modern facility with over 340 shops, was built through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
Oshinowo explained that the market was named after the former Kosofe local government, for the giant strides in the constituency before his death.
The market’s construction was necessitated by the failure of the old market’s failure of integrity test, which prompted the council to engage developers to build a new one.
“We are thinking about sustainability in our development, and this is why we keep up with modern infrastructure,” Oshinowo said.
“This market has not been built around Lagos for a while, but you can see what we’re giving to our community. We want to give them something that will be sustainable.”
Oshinowo emphasised that the commissioning of the market and other projects is not about fanfare but about letting people know what the government has done, he stressed that his administration was also desirous to build infrastructure that would have a direct impact on people at the grassroots.
The Babatunde Braimoh Model Market is expected to boost economic activity in the local community, and the council has worked out arrangements with the developer for people to subscribe to the shops through mortgage or rent.
Oshinowo urged the community to approach the developer and the council to find out the best option for them.
As the council approaches the end of its tenure, Oshinowo solicit support for his successor, saying that he was sure that she will build on the council’s achievements and perform even better.
The delivery of these projects demonstrates the council’s commitment to giving back to the community and leaving a lasting legacy.
Oshinowo emphasised that the government will serve the people to the last day of its office, and the projects commissioned will stand the test of time.
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Obasa, noted that this was his second visit to the area and expressed delight at the monumental projects being executed by Oshinowo’s administration. He urged the incoming chairman to surpass Oshinowo’s achievements if elected.
The Speaker paid tribute to the late Braimoh, who was his colleague at the state House of Assembly, after whom the model market was named.
Obasa described Braimoh as an outstanding lawmaker and eloquent speaker.
Obasa said, “Today, we have come to celebrate somebody. It serves as a lesson to leave a good life and do well, that whatever good you do, people will never forget. Do your best to relate to the people and serve the people.”
Obasa commended Oshinowo, his cabinet, and the legislators for their unity and collaboration, which have led to the successful execution of development projects in the area.
Former Lagos East Senator, Gbenga Ashafa, said the projects showcased Oshinowo’s consistency in undertaking initiatives that truly matter to the people.
He highlighted the significance of the projects, including Braimoh’s Model Market, roads, and Oyedele Sports and Recreational Centre, saying they were testimonials of hope, enterprise, and community life.
He commended Oshinowo for upholding the progressive ideals of the All Progressives Congress (APC), prioritising people-focused projects, and fostering inclusive growth. He urged other leaders within the local governments to draw inspiration from Oshinowo’s achievements and multiply the good works across the Senatorial District and beyond.
Ashafa emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building bridges of trust, opportunity, and shared prosperity and expressed support for the Renewed Hope agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Let us multiply these good works across our senatorial District and beyond, so that together we deepen the grassroots support for the Renewed Hope agenda,” he said.
Yetunde Arobieke, the first executive chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, described the transformation in the market as massive and lauded Oshinowo’s efforts in developing the market.
Adetola Oyedele-Abubakar, Oshinowo’s successor, said the transformation of the Mandela market into the now modern market will attract people to patronise it, while lauding the construction of the sports center, and the improvement of roads, among other infrastructure developments.
She promised to sustain the tempo and deliver infrastructure via development.
