The National Assembly has announced the suspension of all legislative activities until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday, July 13, in London, United Kingdom.
The suspension was conveyed in an official statement signed by Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly, on Monday.
According to the statement, the decision was jointly made by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a mark of respect for the former leader.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities in the National Assembly are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July, 2025,” the statement read.

Lawmakers have been urged to adjust their schedules to allow for full participation in the burial rites of Buhari, who was president from 2015 to 2023.
“The leadership of both Chambers, on behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly, extends heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the government and people of Katsina State; his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family,” the statement continued.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” it added.
The Clerk also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul, saying, “May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
The passing of President Buhari marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history.
A retired Major General, he previously served as Head of State from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup. He later returned as a democratically elected President in 2015 after multiple attempts at the ballot.
