Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) sealed a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich to advance to the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, overcoming two red cards in an intense quarter-final clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA.
Goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele powered the French champions past Bundesliga rivals Bayern in what was the most high-profile encounter of FIFA’s expanded tournament so far.
Despite finishing with nine men after Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez were sent off late in the game, Luis Enrique’s men showed grit and discipline to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund.
PSG break Bayern hoodoo
Bayern had won their previous four meetings with PSG, including a 1-0 win in the UEFA Champions League last November, but the Parisians turned the tide in Atlanta with a commanding performance. The German champions suffered a major blow when Jamal Musiala was forced off just before half-time with a serious ankle injury.
PSG, fresh from completing a domestic treble, showed attacking flair and resilience, with the likes of Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes, three of five Portuguese players in the squad, playing key roles. The emotional occasion was marked by a minute’s silence in memory of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a tragic car accident on Thursday.
Tactical battle
The match lived up to its billing as a “perfect storm,” in the words of Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, with both teams adopting high-pressing, attacking styles. The electric atmosphere inside the 67,000-seater stadium was matched by end-to-end football.
PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola were constant threats, forcing Manuel Neuer into a series of fine saves. At the other end, Gianluigi Donnarumma was equally outstanding, denying Michael Olise and reacting quickly to keep out efforts from Aleksandar Pavlovic and Harry Kane.
VAR and Red Cards
Dayot Upamecano had a goal ruled out for offside in first-half stoppage time, and the game’s intensity boiled over in the closing stages. PSG were reduced to nine men after quickfire red cards for Pacho and Hernandez, but Bayern failed to capitalise.
Substitute Dembele, returning from a quadriceps injury, added PSG’s second goal to seal the result after Doue had opened the scoring with a composed finish.
Road to the semi-final
PSG’s victory marks a significant step in their pursuit of global silverware and sets up a tantalising semi-final showdown with either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund.
With momentum and emotion on their side, Luis Enrique’s squad will look to continue their historic run in the United States as they chase their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup title.
