Birmingham City are reportedly in advanced discussions to sign Nigerian defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, whose contract with Turkish giants Fenerbahce expires on June 30, making him available on a free transfer.
According to Football Insider, the newly-promoted Championship side are looking to swoop in after Osayi-Samuel’s proposed move to Besiktas collapsed. With the defender now a free agent, Birmingham are hoping to strengthen their squad with a player who brings top-flight and European experience.
Manager Chris Davies is keen to build a side capable of challenging for Premier League promotion in the upcoming season, and Osayi-Samuel fits the club’s strategy of targeting experienced players. Despite having the talented Ethan Laird at right-back, the club wants to bolster competition and depth in that area.
Osayi-Samuel, 27, previously impressed in the Championship with Queens Park Rangers, where he was named Young Player of the Year in 2020 before securing a move to Fenerbahce in January 2021. He has since made 39 appearances for the Turkish club last season under José Mourinho, featuring in both domestic and European competitions, although he didn’t register a goal or assist.
The Nigerian international has remained a regular in the Super Eagles squad, often starting at right-back during recent international breaks. His combination of European pedigree, Championship experience, and availability on a free transfer makes him a strong candidate for Birmingham’s summer rebuild.
With other targets including Demarai Gray and Tommy Doyle also on the club’s radar, Birmingham City are showing serious intent in the market as they aim for back-to-back promotions following their League One title win.
Osayi-Samuel’s arrival would represent a smart, low-risk addition to the Blues’ defensive ranks ahead of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.
