The Federal Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media and some news platforms that the Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran, Iran, has shut down operations and abandoned Nigerian citizens due to rising tensions in the region.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government categorically denied the claims and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of all Nigerians residing in Iran.
“The Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran remains fully operational and has not, at any point, ceased to attend to the needs of Nigerian nationals in the country,” the statement read.
The Ministry, however, acknowledged that the escalating conflict involving Israel and its impact on regional security has disrupted normal diplomatic activities in Tehran.
“Due to consistent bombings in the Iranian capital, embassy staff have been compelled to operate remotely for safety reasons.
“Despite these challenges, the Embassy is actively engaging with regional partners to ensure the protection and possible evacuation of Nigerians if necessary”, the Ministry said
The statement noted that discussions are ongoing with the Government of Armenia to secure evacuation routes through the Armenian capital, Yerevan.
To facilitate assistance, the Ministry provided emergency contact information for Nigerians in Iran, urging them to reach out through the emails and phone numbers, which include Esson Anzaku: +989393216872, Abutalib: +989024199018, +989393216872. Emails: nigeria.tehran@mfa.gov.ng, anzakuesson02@gmail.com, lawshed@yahoo.com
Nigerians were also advised to maintain close contact with the designated coordinators of the Nigerian community in three key locations across Iran, as previously arranged.
Furthermore, the Embassy encouraged all Nigerian nationals in Iran to download and use eitaa, a local Iranian messaging application, and join the Nigerian group created on the platform for real-time updates and instructions.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains vigilant and continues to closely monitor developments in Iran and the wider Middle East.
“We assure the public that every necessary step will be taken to safeguard the lives and interests of Nigerians abroad,” the statement noted.
