Ajao Adewale, Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a strong warning to all officers under his command, directing them to desist from illegal detentions, extortion, and unlawful interference in civil matters, particularly land disputes.
This directive was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by Josephine Adeh. Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command.
According to the statement, the clampdown comes in response to growing reports of police officers detaining individuals over bailable offences, demanding money from complainants and suspects, and involving themselves in disputes that fall outside police jurisdiction.
Describing such actions as violations of the constitutional rights of citizens and contrary to the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Adewale instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to immediately review cases in their custody.
He ordered the prompt release of suspects held for minor or bailable offences, provided proper documentation and surety verification are in place.
“Let it be clear that bail is free. Any officer found collecting money for bail or documentation will be dealt with through strict disciplinary action”, Adewale warned.
He also emphasised that police officers have no role in resolving civil matters, especially land-related disputes, which are to be settled by civil courts or appropriate authorities.
“Officers found flouting this order, including their supervising officers who fail to enforce the directive, will face sanctions”, he added.
The Commissioner further condemned the practice of demanding payment before investigating cases, stating that such behaviour amounts to extortion and abuse of office, both of which are prosecutable offences.
Adewale urged residents of the FCT not to encourage corruption by offering bribes to officers. He reminded citizens that bribery is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act.
He also cautioned against the misuse of police services for debt recovery or to pursue personal grievances. The CP called on FCT residents to support ongoing efforts to uphold professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights within the police force.
He encouraged members of the public to report any instances of police misconduct to the Complaint Response Unit via 08107314192.
