Eight persons travelling for a wedding were killed in a mob attack on Friday evening in Mangun District, Mangu local government area of Plateau State, prompting widespread condemnation from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kaduna State.
The victims, reportedly journeying from Zaria in Kaduna State to Quan’pan LGA in Plateau, lost their way and entered a tense community grappling with prolonged terrorist violence. The tragic incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. on Friday, also left several others injured, who are now receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Mangu.
Governor Mutfwang, who visited both the hospital and the scene of the violence on Saturday, described the mob action as “totally condemnable and avoidable,” stating that it contradicts the spirit of hospitality for which Plateau people are known.

He lamented that youths who have supported security efforts in the past would take the law into their own hands.
In a statement by Gyang Bere, his Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPA), made available to Journalists on Saturday in Jos, Governor Mutfwang emphasised that the continued terrorist attacks in Mangun and adjoining districts of Chakfem and Mushere do not justify such acts of jungle justice.
“This is utterly unacceptable, and the government will not sweep it under the carpet,” the Governor said while urging residents to uphold peace and respect for human life.
The Governor revealed that he had spoken to his Kaduna State counterpart and the Emir of Zazzau to express condolences. He also announced the formation of a high-level delegation to visit the affected families and the government of Kaduna State to formally convey Plateau’s sympathy.

Assuring that justice would be pursued, Governor Mutfwang directed security agencies to conduct a full investigation into the incident and to implement preventive measures. He further ordered that the Plateau State Government would cover the full cost of treatment for the injured.
The Governor reiterated that Plateau remains safe and hospitable to all Nigerians, encouraging citizens to embrace unity even amidst the hardships caused by persistent attacks in parts of the state. He noted that his administration remains committed to peace and justice for all.
Mutfwang condemned the ongoing killings in Bokkos, Mangu, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Bassa LGAs, calling attention to the worsening humanitarian crisis. He offered prayers for the recovery of the injured and divine comfort for all bereaved families.
