Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised with gastroenteritis and is expected to be sidelined for at least one week, ruling him out of Real’s next 2025 FIFA Club World Cup fixture.
The 26-year-old France captain missed Tuesday’s training session due to a fever and was absent from Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal in Los Blancos’ tournament opener.
In an official statement on Thursday, Real Madrid confirmed Mbappe is suffering from “an acute case of gastroenteritis” and has been admitted to hospital for further tests and monitoring.
Gastroenteritis, often caused by food poisoning, is a common stomach illness marked by diarrhoea and vomiting and usually resolves within a week, according to the NHS.
Mbappe will miss Real Madrid’s second group game against Mexican champions Pachuca on Sunday. His absence is a major blow for Xabi Alonso’s side, who are aiming for a strong run in their first Club World Cup campaign under the former midfielder.
Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer, Mbappe has been instrumental for Real Madrid, scoring 43 goals in 56 appearances across all competitions, including 31 in La Liga.
Real Madrid entered the 2025 Club World Cup among the tournament favourites after a decade of European dominance, but their campaign began with a disappointing draw in Mbappe’s absence.
