Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) has embarked on a landmark initiative to develop a Five-Year Action Plan (2025-2030) aimed at promoting gender equity and sustainability in Africa’s mining industry.
The plan is being shaped through a collaborative and inclusive process involving stakeholders from over 36 Countries across the continent, a statement signed by Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji, Executive Director, WiM-Africa, stated
The initiative reflects WiM-Africa’s commitment to inclusive governance, local relevance, and continental ownership. The Office of Strategy, Planning and Research (SPR), led by Bethelihem Emiru, is coordinating the process, with strategic oversight from the Office of the Executive Director.

Key highlights of the initiative include Inclusive Approach, Robust Institutional Framework and Innovative Proposals.
According to Asokoro-Ogaji “The Action Plan is being developed through structured consultations, technical submissions, and ongoing peer review, ensuring that all voices, especially those of women in artisanal and small-scale mining, are captured and reflected.
“The plan will be implemented through a robust institutional framework comprising five dedicated directorates and an estimated 29 flagship programs that span across gender equity, value chain inclusion, research, legal advocacy, youth empowerment, and digital influence.”

She added that the consultation had highlighted innovative proposals, including the use of cartoons for grassroots advocacy, local chapter coordination, and a continental monitoring system for gender equity compliance in mining.
The statement called on stakeholders to support the development
“WiM-Africa is calling on all stakeholders, including mining companies, civil society, donors, and governments, to support the development and implementation of this bold plan, which aims to unlock the full potential of African women in the mineral value chain”.
