About 20 athletes from Team Kano have reportedly died in a tragic road accident while returning to Kano from the just concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The heartbreaking incident occurred when the bus carrying the athletes plunged off a bridge, resulting in the loss of several lives and leaving many others with varying degrees of injuries.

The ill-fated bus was conveying 30 athletes and officials when the accident occurred.
Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano,” Hon. Kwankwaso said.
He described the incident as a period of mourning for the entire state and assured that the Kano State Government is fully committed to supporting the injured and the bereaved families.
“The government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support,” he added.
