Team Delta has officially emerged as the champions of the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), Gateway Games Ogun 2024, held in Abeokuta.
In a dominant display, Delta State amassed 109 gold, 75 silver, and 87 bronze medals as of the morning of May 29. Delta’s lead is unassailable, despite a few events remaining before the festival’s grand closing ceremony on Thursday.
Delta’s medal haul comfortably places it ahead of other leading contenders: Bayelsa (80 gold), Ogun (69 gold), Rivers (65 gold), and Edo (55 gold).
While final medal counts will be confirmed after all events conclude, Delta’s position as overall winner is guaranteed.
In celebration of the feat, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, dedicated the victory to the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as part of the ongoing celebrations for the Governor’s second year in office.
“This victory is for His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, whose unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports excellence through the MORE Agenda has brought us this far,” said Oborevwori.
“Even though some medal events are still to be concluded, our commanding lead confirms that Delta is once again number one.”
Oborevwori praised the athletes, coaches, and the entire Team Delta contingent for their discipline, dedication, and hard work, noting that the achievement is a direct result of strategic investment and visionary leadership.
“This is not just about medals; it’s about building lives and inspiring hope. The MORE Agenda has opened doors for our youths to thrive through sports, and this win is proof of what is possible when leadership meets action.”
Oborevwori also commended the tireless efforts of the technical crew, administrators, and support staff, emphasising their vital role in Delta’s continued dominance on the national sports stage.
“As we look forward to receiving the championship trophy during the closing ceremony, we do so with gratitude, pride, and the determination to keep building champions.”
