Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the National Sports Festival (NSF) as a symbol of national unity and healing, noting that it has helped rebuild peace and mutual respect since the Nigerian Civil War.
In a statement issued Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo welcomed delegates from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to the 22nd NSF, taking place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Titled “A Triumph of the Spirit,” the former President’s address reflected on the origins and deeper significance of the festival.
“Since its inception in Lagos in 1973, the NSF has been more than a competition. It has served as a beacon of unity, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the Civil War,” Obasanjo stated.
“Today, it continues to bring people together, fostering friendships across cultural divides and preparing athletes for future challenges.”
He emphasised that the true value of the Games lies not in medals or rankings, but in the courage, perseverance, and joy of participation.
“For some, the journey may not lead to a podium finish, but the sacrifice, determination, and grit that brought you here are victories in their own right,” he said. “These Gateway Games celebrate that indomitable spirit, the drive to overcome obstacles and pursue excellence.”
Obasanjo concluded by urging the athletes to embrace camaraderie and unity:
“In sports, we find a unique connection that transcends politics and language barriers. May these Games bring joy, unity, and the triumph of the human spirit.”
The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival is currently ongoing in Ogun State.
