In a groundbreaking evening that celebrated public service, community cohesion, and cultural pride, Ameen’s Restaurant and Hall, in partnership with the Peel Regional Police Black Internal Support Network (BISN), successfully hosted the first-ever Peel Police Appreciation and Award Ceremony on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
The ceremony, held in Mississauga, brought together an esteemed lineup of public servants, dignitaries, and community members to honor the brave men and women of the Peel Regional Police Service for their outstanding commitment to safety, service, and inclusiveness.
The event was emceed by Detective Kamour Balogun, a highly respected officer and proud Nigerian-Canadian with over 20 years of police service. Known for his efforts in building trust between law enforcement and multicultural communities, Balogun’s leadership reflected the event’s spirit of mutual respect and dialogue.
Distinguished guests included Member of Parliament Shafqat Ali, President of the Treasury Board of Canada, alongside MPs Fares Al Soud and Rudy Cuzzetto, and Councillors Stephen Dasko, Chris Fonseca, and Rod Power.
A highlight of the night was a moving speech by Wale Rabiu, President of Grey Matlock Bakery, who delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of the Black community, calling for unity, greater representation, and stronger relationships between law enforcement and diverse communities.
The ceremony was the brainchild Akeem Ameen and Maryam Ameen, owners of Ameen’s Restaurant and Hall, whose vision was to foster understanding and celebrate the contributions of Peel’s frontline officers.
“This was more than an event—it was a statement of appreciation, inclusion, and hope,” said Ameen. “We are proud to create spaces where meaningful conversations begin, and communities are strengthened.”
The evening also delighted guests with a culinary showcase from Ameen’s Kitchen, featuring Afro-Caribbean and international fusion dishes that highlighted the establishment’s flair for taste, tradition, and hospitality.
