The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are fully focused on their crucial quarter-final clash against defending champions Senegal on Monday, with a spot at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile up for grabs.
Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu says his boys are “determined and ready” for the high-stakes encounter in Ismailia, where only victory guarantees a semi-final ticket and World Cup qualification.
Flying Eagles set for Lions’ rematch
Having finished second in Group B behind Morocco, Nigeria now face another set of Lion Cubs, Senegal, who also placed second in Group C behind DR Congo.
The tournament has now entered the knockout stage, with eight teams left in the hunt for four World Cup tickets after Tunisia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Central African Republic were eliminated.
NFF rallies behind Flying Eagles
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has thrown his weight behind the Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions.
“You’re not just playing for pride but for a World Cup ticket,” said Sanusi. “We believe in you, and now you must repay that belief by delivering on Monday.”
History and rivalry rekindled
This clash echoes their 2023 U20 AFCON meeting, where Senegal edged Nigeria 1-0 en route to claiming their first title. But the Flying Eagles hold fond memories of their 2015 triumph over Senegal on home soil — a 3-1 win in the group opener and a 1-0 win in the final to secure their seventh title.
Zubairu confident
Coach Zubairu admits the contest has all the makings of a final, given the high stakes and the fierce footballing rivalry between both countries.
“It’s like a final. We know what’s at stake, and we’re ready to give it everything,” he said. “The rivalry with Senegal only makes it more intense.”
