In a cinematic couple collaboration Olabode Izy, Nigerian filmmaker has teamed up with his wife, Ibukunmi Olabode, to bring their short film ‘Ayobami’ to life. This collaboration is reminiscent of Hollywood director Christopher Nolan and his producer wife, Emma Thomas, known for hits like ‘Inception’ and ‘The Dark Knight’.
Marking Izy’s first project with full creative control, the couple’s partnership shines through, with Izy co-writing and directing while Ibukunmi takes the helm as producer. Together, they’ve crafted a story that explores purpose, love, and the power of choice, blending personal passion with professional synergy.
“It was a beautiful experience working with my wife,” Izy said. “She’s an exceptional, detail-oriented producer—organised and intentional. Her strength made it easy for me to direct with clarity. We worked in perfect sync, with no issues on set.” Ibukunmi’s meticulous approach complemented Izy’s vision, resulting in a film they affectionately call “our baby,” a testament to their shared dedication.
The inspiration for ‘Ayobami’ struck during a gathering at Eden Center, where a young man shared his story of abandoning his dreams to fulfill his mother’s wishes, leading to addiction and regret. “His story moved us deeply,” Izy recalled. “I hope ‘Ayobami’ inspires people to follow their purpose—life’s too short to spend on things we don’t love.” The film also carries a personal tribute to Izy’s late brother, Olaoluwa Olabode, whose support provided a home during production. Tragically, Olaoluwa passed away months after filming, and his son, Moranuoluwa, plays young Ayobami, adding a poignant family connection.
Production wasn’t without hurdles. “Our biggest challenge was funding,” Izy admitted. “We overcame it by partnering with two major media houses for equipment and resources—special thanks to Icon Media.” The story’s emotional weight kept the team driven, and the result is GreatMind Global Studios’ debut project, a milestone for Izy after years of groundwork in the industry.
The cast brought the narrative to life with standout performances. Lead actor Awe Ayobami, sharing the character’s name, delivered a powerful portrayal. “His audition tape stood out, and his dedication on set was unmatched,” Izy said. Adeola Awodein’s moving performance as the mother left crew members in tears, while Aderonke Onuoha’s natural chemistry with Awe as Tonia lit up the screen. “I even asked if they were dating in real life!” Izy laughed. Young Ayobami, played by Izy’s nephew Moranuoluwa, added energy and curiosity, rounding out a cast that was deeply connected with the story.
Though ‘Ayobami’ is Izy’s first film with creative autonomy, he’s no newcomer to filmmaking. A graduate of the EbonyLife Creative Academy, he’s contributed to six projects, including ‘The Samaritan’ and ‘She’ in 2021. With ‘Ayobami’, however, he steps into the spotlight alongside Ibukunmi, setting the stage for their future.
Following a private screening on May 3rd, the film will tour universities and hit film festivals, with GreatMind Global Studios already developing two more projects. “We’re just getting started,” Izy promised, hinting at a busy slate ahead.
As Izy and Ibukunmi Olabode carve their path, ‘Ayobami’ stands as a testament to their creative partnership and a tribute to Olaoluwa’s legacy. Much like Nolan and Thomas, this duo’s collaboration blends love and art, promising impactful stories for a new generation of viewers.
