Telecommunication operators have committed about $1 billion to network expansion and upgrade efforts in 2025, according to Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
He disclosed this at a colloquium on a ‘Legislative Agenda: The Nigerian Communications Act 2003’ on Tuesday. The NCC boss noted that the $1 billion was more than what was invested last year and more than double what was invested in 2023.

He stated that some of these equipment are yet to be built by Original Equipment Manufacturers, while orders have been placed for some already, and they would soon come in. Maida emphasised that this would have a positive effect on telecom services in the country when it fully rolls out.
This is set to bring relief to millions of Nigerians who have been left frustrated by worsening network connectivity in the country, despite a 50 percent hike in telecom service costs. This $1 billion will ensure that telecom operators can embark on comprehensive network infrastructure upgrades.
Earlier, an industry source told BusinessDay, “Glo has cleared new equipment at customs, and Airtel and MTN are placing large orders for network upgrades. These investments are worth millions of dollars.”

The proposed network overhaul follows the NCC’s approval of a 50 percent increase in calls, data, and SMS tariffs after a decade-long push by telecom operators for price adjustments because of harsh economic conditions.
