Luka Jovic scored twice as AC Milan defeated fierce rivals Inter Milan 4-1 on aggregate to book their place in the Coppa Italia final.
The first leg of the Derby della Madonnina had ended 1-1, leaving everything to play for in the return leg. Former Real Madrid striker Jovic broke the deadlock nine minutes before half-time, heading home a well-delivered cross to give Milan the lead on the night and in the tie.
Just four minutes into the second half, Jovic struck again, this time flicking in from close range after a corner to double Milan’s advantage. It marked a remarkable turnaround for the Serbian forward, who failed to score until March but now boasts four goals in his last five appearances.
Goalkeeper Mike Maignan produced a vital save to deny Stefan de Vrij and keep Inter at bay before Tijjani Reijnders added a late third to seal a dominant 3-0 second-leg victory.
The result keeps Milan’s hopes of salvaging silverware from what has been a disappointing campaign. Currently ninth in Serie A and eliminated from the Champions League, the Coppa Italia now represents their final shot at glory.
The defeat also dashed Inter’s hopes of a treble this season, though they remain top of Serie A and in the Champions League semi-finals.
In the other semi-final, Bologna hold a 3-0 advantage over Empoli ahead of Thursday’s second leg.
