Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract that will extend his stay at Anfield beyond the 2024/25 season.
The Dutch defender, who joined the Reds from Southampton in January 2018, has committed his future to the club almost seven-and-a-half years after initially arriving on Merseyside. His new deal ensures he remains a central figure in Liverpool’s plans for the coming campaigns.
Van Dijk’s contract renewal comes just a week after fellow star Mohamed Salah also agreed fresh terms with the club, signalling Liverpool’s intent to retain their key players.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Van Dijk expressed his delight.
> “I’m very happy, very proud.
There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.
It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”
Since his arrival, Van Dijk has established himself as one of the premier defenders in world football. His leadership and defensive mastery have been pivotal to Liverpool’s recent successes, contributing to seven major trophies.
The Netherlands international has made 314 appearances and scored 27 goals for the Reds. His silverware collection includes the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
