Arsenal dumped holders Real Madrid out of the UEFA Champions League with a stunning 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, sealing a 5-1 aggregate victory to book a semi-final showdown with Paris Saint-Germain.
Bukayo Saka was the star of the show, recovering from an earlier missed Panenka penalty to coolly chip home Arsenal’s opener in the second half. Although Vinicius Junior briefly levelled for Madrid, Gabriel Martinelli struck a stoppage-time winner to rub salt in the wounds and cap a famous night for the Gunners.
Their emphatic 3-0 first-leg win in London had already set the stage for an upset, and Mikel Arteta’s men held firm in Madrid to reach the last four of the competition for the first time since 2009.
“We knew we were going to suffer, but we knew we were going to win,” said Declan Rice, who scored twice in the first leg. “It’s a historic night for this club… we want to win this competition.”
Despite their rich European pedigree, 15-time champions Real Madrid looked a shadow of their former selves. Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to break down a disciplined Arsenal defence and created little to threaten a comeback.
“It was a difficult game. We didn’t have all the chances we would have liked,” admitted Lucas Vazquez. “They were very well organised and did their job.”
Drama at the Bernabeu
Real Madrid thought they had taken an early lead through Kylian Mbappe, but his chested effort was ruled offside. The French star, frustrated, urged the home fans to raise the volume in a bid to summon the Bernabeu’s famed comeback spirit.
But Arsenal were not fazed. Saka tested Thibaut Courtois with a fierce drive and was brought down by David Alaba moments later. The breakthrough came after VAR reviewed a corner and spotted Raul Asencio pulling back Mikel Merino in the box, a decision that stunned the Madrid crowd.
Although Saka saw his initial penalty attempt saved by Courtois, he made amends after the break with a delicate finish to restore Arsenal’s aggregate control.
Madrid responded with a Vinicius equaliser, but their push for a miracle fizzled out. Arsenal remained composed, and in added time, Martinelli pounced to complete a memorable victory.
The Gunners, who have never lifted the Champions League trophy, now stand two games away from a historic final and face Kylian Mbappe’s PSG for a place in Istanbul.
