Apprenticeships fall under the skilled trades sector, and covers a wide range of technical and vocational fields, including electrical work, mechanics, welding, catering, plumbing, and more.
Apprenticeships in Canada provides a blend of hands-on, practical training alongside classroom-based theoretical learning, ultimately leading to a professional qualification in a skilled trade which offers numerous job opportunities.
This typically spans two to five years, with approximately 80 per cent on-the-job experience and 20 per cent academic instruction, according to New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) and Confederation College.
Participants will also earn a salary while acquiring skills, and upon successful completion, they may receive a Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification.
According to CIC news, “Some temporary foreign workers can now enroll in apprenticeship programs without requiring a study permit. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released details on this new study permit exemption. Have an apprenticeship agreement with an employer for the work described in the job offer”.
