In an economy where consumer expectations are shifting as fast as market dynamics, staying ahead of the curve is no easy feat. Yet, BIC, a brand best known for its iconic pens, lighters, and razors is doing just that. With over 70 years of presence in Nigeria, the brand is not just surviving, it’s evolving.
BIC is proving that innovation can be both practical and transformative when grounded in local insight. In this interview, Anthony Amahwe, general manager of BIC Nigeria, reveals how he plans to continue setting the pace in Nigeria’s manufacturing and FMCG sectors. BusinessDay’s Chinwe Michael brings excerpts.
BIC has a long-standing reputation for innovation. How does the company plan to continue fostering innovation to meet local and global market demands?
At BIC, innovation is deeply embedded in our commitment to understanding and anticipating the evolving needs of consumers both locally and globally. Our Horizon Strategic Plan exemplifies this commitment by emphasising a consumer-centric approach grounded in sustainable innovation.
This strategy enables us to respond swiftly and effectively to changing market dynamics, ensuring our brand remains relevant and purposeful for decades to come.
Understanding the unique preferences of Nigerian consumers, we tailor our products by combining local insights with our global expertise. A key example is the introduction of the BIC Flex 2 shaver, designed with features such as a dual open-blade system for easy rinsing and a pivoting head for adaptability. This reflects our commitment to practical innovation, ensuring that our products meet the everyday needs of consumers while maintaining the quality standards associated with the BIC brand.
Beyond product development, we also focus on innovating our processes and business models to enhance efficiency and sustainability. By embracing new technologies and fostering a culture of creative thinking, we ensure that BIC remains at the forefront of the industry, delivering value to both consumers and stakeholders.
What challenges do you foresee for the manufacturing and FMCG industries in Nigeria, and how is BIC prepared to navigate them?
Nigeria’s manufacturing and FMCG sectors present significant opportunities for growth, and BIC is well-positioned to navigate the evolving landscape. With decades of experience in the market, we remain committed to agility, operational efficiency, and delivering value to consumers. The industry is experiencing shifts due to evolving consumer preferences, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory adjustments. BIC is proactively adapting by optimizing our manufacturing processes, strengthening local sourcing, and leveraging strategic partnerships to enhance product availability.
Our resilience in the face of industry dynamics is driven by a deep understanding of the Nigerian market, a commitment to innovation, and strong relationships with key stakeholders. Through these efforts, BIC continues to thrive and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic growth.
How does BIC adapt to the shifting preferences and needs of Nigerian consumers, especially in a diverse market like Nigeria?
For over 70 years, BIC has been a steadfast presence in Nigeria, evolving alongside the nation’s fast-paced market to meet the diverse preferences of its consumers. Our ability to adapt is rooted in ongoing consumer research, which helps us understand shifts in purchasing behavior, lifestyle trends, and economic conditions. One way we adapt is through product innovation tailored to local needs.
Take our writing instruments, for example—Nigerians rely on durable and cost-effective pens for education and business. The BIC Cristal Original pen remains a staple, offering reliability and affordability for students and professionals alike.
In the shaving category, we recognise that grooming habits evolve with time. That’s why we have expanded our portfolio with products like the BIC Twin Lady, designed specifically for the growing number of women looking for a convenient and effective shaving solution. Similarly, our BIC Flex line incorporates features that enhance comfort and precision, catering to modern grooming preferences.
Adapting to local needs also means being mindful of economic realities, and ensuring our products remain accessible without compromising quality. By staying close to consumers, investing in relevant product innovation, and aligning our offerings with both local preferences and global trends, BIC continues to provide solutions that resonate with Nigerian consumers.
How is BIC leveraging technology to enhance its manufacturing processes, product offerings, and customer engagement in Nigeria?
BIC has always been at the forefront of innovation, and technology plays a critical role in strengthening our operations and consumer engagement in Nigeria. On the manufacturing front, we continuously invest in advanced production techniques that enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and maintain the highest product quality standards.
Beyond manufacturing, we leverage digital transformation to deepen our connection with Nigerian consumers. By integrating technology across all aspects of our business – from production to consumer engagement and creative empowerment – BIC continues to enhance its market presence and deliver exceptional value to Nigerian consumers.
Sustainability is becoming a key focus in manufacturing. What steps is BIC Nigeria taking to implement sustainable practices in its operations?
Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of BIC’s operations, and in Nigeria, we are committed to implementing responsible business practices that drive long-term environmental and economic impact. Beyond clean energy adoption, we are investing in energy-efficient manufacturing processes, optimising resource use, and reducing emissions, waste, and water consumption across our operations and supply chain.
Our commitment extends to sustainable packaging, with 100 percent of our packaging materials sourced locally, further supporting Nigeria’s economy and reducing our carbon footprint.
By integrating these sustainable practices, BIC Nigeria is not only aligning with national policies but also setting a benchmark for responsible and innovative manufacturing in the country.
Are there any plans for partnerships or collaborations with local organizations, governments, or educational institutions to further BIC’s goals in the region?
Absolutely. Partnerships are a core pillar of our strategy. BIC is dedicated to advancing education and youth empowerment in Nigeria through collaborations with local organisations, government bodies, and educational institutions. A key initiative is Canvas of Change, a program launched in 2023 to transform educational experiences. In partnership with renowned educators, we conducted masterclasses for teachers from over 100 Lagos schools, equipping them with modern teaching strategies to enhance classroom engagement.
Furthering our goal to improve learning conditions for 250 million students by 2025, BIC partnered with the Ogun State Ministry of Education in August 2024 to donate 50,000 writing tools, ensuring students are well-equipped for the academic year.
Beyond these efforts, we continue to collaborate with NGOs and educational organisations, including Let It Shine Academy (LISA) and Rising Star Africa Foundation, supporting school renovations, stationery donations, and mentorship programs that have positively impacted thousands of students. As we move forward, we remain committed to expanding these partnerships and deepening our impact in the communities we serve.
What is your vision for BIC Nigeria in 2025, and how does it align with the country’s evolving manufacturing and FMCG environment?
Over the years, BIC has built a strong reputation as a trusted brand in Nigeria, delivering high-quality and affordable stationery, lighters, and shavers. As a leader in the FMCG sector, we remain committed to driving innovation, expanding accessibility, and fostering local talent development.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2025, our vision for BIC Nigeria is centered on strengthening our market presence, expanding our distribution, enhancing operational efficiency, and deepening our impact on Nigerian communities. We are committed to contributing to the country’s economic growth through job creation, local sourcing, and skills development. Investing in sustainability, education, and entrepreneurship aligns with Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda while fostering innovation and empowerment.
