The newly opened Bnatural Spa at Abayagbon Close Victoria Island is shrouded in quietness on a sunny Wednesday in April. It is just the perfect atmosphere to relax and rejuvenate a tired body. Bnatural’s journey into the spa business began 10 years ago when it opened its flagship store in Abuja. It was a time when the concept of spa had not been fully embraced by the Nigerian elite. Today, the story is different.
“A spa is not a place where you go until you have a problem,” says Ndidi Olatunji-Bello, CEO, Bnatural Spa. “The more we have spas of our standard the more people began to buy into the idea of a spa. The concept of spa is not about how large the space you have is, but what you are able to do with it.”
Functional empty spaces are at the core of Bnatural Spa and the new place has not fallen short of it. There is ample of space to play and lounge around while enjoying the very best of hammans treatment for detoxification. “Hammans is a breathing warmth treatment,” says Nadia Laloun, an expert in hammans treatment at Bnatural Spa, “because it takes place in a warm room. It is a treatment that originated from Morocco. It detoxifies the body and emotion. It is based on the use of non-organic products. It is based on three steps: steam room, scrubbing and mineral rock.”
Skin care and general well-being is key for Bnatural, hence Olatunji Bello says she has taken great care in her choice of partners and the kind of skin care product used. “Skin care is a big issue in Africa,” says Faana Assafa, a foremost dermatologist based in the United States and a consultant to Bnatural Spa. Laser is a light care for women of colour and it has been carefully designed to take care of black skin. Skin is the biggest organ in the body and Bnatural Spa is the only place in Africa that has more than 10 lasers for women of colour.”

Bnatural Spa understands the concerns of women of colour when it comes to skin care, hence it has a growing partnership with the manufacturer of Germain de Capuccini, an advanced skin care company based in Spain. “Our philosophy as a company,” explains Maria Eppel, a representative of the company who works with Bnatural Spa, is to produce safe natural products for different problem of the skin. We have tested the products before they are released. We want to give maximum satisfaction to our clients. We sell products only to qualified spas and salons.”
In addition, skin care is not about bleaching the skin, which could be damaging the melanin. This is a message that Bnatural Spa is advocating for women of colour. “If you take care of your skin, you don’t have to be light. All you just need is that glow. If you exfoliate your skin, it will glow. Hydroquinone and mercury are not good for the skin and that is what you have in most cream sold in the open market.”
At Bnatural Spa, consultation is free. It is about the only spa that does this free in the country. It has an x-ray machine that looks at what goes on in the skin and can tell what the skin will be in 10 years.
