Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that his squad does not deserve any share of the £97 million prize money the club could earn by winning the FIFA Club World Cup this summer.
Football’s governing body, FIFA, has confirmed the prize structure for the expanded 32-team tournament in the United States, with major European clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Manchester City in contention for the biggest financial rewards.
However, despite the potential windfall if City win the final at the MetLife Stadium on July 13, Guardiola believes his players and staff should not receive any additional bonuses, citing their underwhelming 2024-25 campaign.
City endured a disappointing Champions League run, suffering their earliest exit since 2013, and currently sit fifth in the Premier League, battling to secure a top-four finish.
“We don’t deserve a bonus this season,” Guardiola stated.
“The bonus, if you win, I don’t know how much, it’s for the club. The managers, the backroom staff, the players, we don’t deserve—not even a watch.”
City’s struggles this season have placed them under immense pressure, with their Champions League qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Despite their Club World Cup opportunity, Guardiola’s comments suggest a sense of frustration with the team’s overall performance.
