Oju Abuja Amala, a restaurant in the Federal Capital Territory, has launched a waste management initiative encouraging customers to reduce waste while earning rewards.
Speaking on the initiative, Shinayomi Daniel, Executive Director and ambassador of Oju Abuja Amala, said, “At Oju Abuja Amala, we believe every customer has a role to play in building a sustainable environment, and this waste reduction programme is an encouragement and enlightenment initiative for Nigerians to reduce waste.”
The programme requires customers to reuse the restaurant’s take-out paper bags and return at least 15 for recycling. Customers who meet this target will receive a ₦20,000 meal voucher.
Daniel added, “The take-out bags will either be reused or recycled by Oju Abuja Amala as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability as a brand. For our customers, they will have the opportunity to win meal vouchers as they make a difference by reducing waste, so it is a win-win for the company, customers and the environment.”
Solid waste remains an environmental menace in Nigeria with at least 332 million tonnes of solid tonnes generated annually by Nigeria and only about 20-30% of the waste is collected and managed correctly
