England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly agreed to leave Liverpool and join Spanish giants Real Madrid this summer, according to talkSPORT.
The Liverpool star will depart Anfield after reaching personal terms on a five-year deal worth over £220,000 per week with the La Liga champions.
Free transfer after failed January approach
Alexander-Arnold has been in discussions with Real Madrid since January, but Liverpool rejected an approach from the Spanish club during the winter transfer window. With his contract expiring this summer, the 26-year-old is now free to move on a free transfer.
After months of negotiations, the full-back has decided to begin a new chapter in Madrid, bringing an end to his illustrious Liverpool career.
Blow for Liverpool fans
For Reds supporters, the news comes as a major disappointment, as Alexander-Arnold has been a cornerstone of the club’s success under Jurgen Klopp. A boyhood Liverpool fan, he has established himself as one of the world’s top right-backs, helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, and multiple domestic trophies.
Adding to the disappointment, the fact that Liverpool will not receive a transfer fee for one of their prized assets will be a bitter pill to swallow.
Past comments hinted at Liverpool’s legacy
Back in September, Alexander-Arnold hinted at his long-term ambitions at Anfield.
“I have always said I want to captain the club. That is a goal of mine, but whether that happens is out of my hands.”
When asked what would influence his future, he emphasized his hunger for silverware.
“The most important thing is always trophies. I want to win trophies. This season, we are looking really good, but we need a lot of consistency.”
Pundits react to shock exit
Speaking on talkSPORT, chief football correspondent Alex Crook confirmed the move.
“Unlike Mo Salah, Trent has not spoken much about his contract situation. He wanted to be as respectful as possible and avoid distractions during Liverpool’s title challenge.”
Football pundit Simon Jordan reacted to the news, insisting he had long expected the move.
“I said a year ago that Trent would go to Real Madrid—it was a done deal. It’s no surprise to me. He’s a going concern, a resalable asset, whereas Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah may not be as much.”
“I think Salah and Van Dijk will stay, but I never believed Trent would re-sign for Liverpool. He has won everything at the club, and now he’s moving to the biggest team in world football.”
