Chelsea will be required to pay Manchester United £5 million if they choose not to sign Jadon Sancho permanently this summer.
Sancho’s loan deal and purchase obligation
The 24-year-old winger joined Chelsea on a season-long loan in August, with the agreement including an obligation to buy for a fee between £20m and £25million, provided Chelsea finish at least 14th in the Premier League.
With Chelsea currently sitting fourth in the table and nine games remaining, the conditions for a permanent transfer are likely to be met. However, as reported by The Athletic, sources have confirmed that a clause allows Chelsea to send Sancho back to Old Trafford if they pay United £5m in compensation.
Chelsea’s uncertain stance on Sancho’s future
While Chelsea have publicly stated they are not considering activating the clause, doubts remain over whether Sancho will stay at Stamford Bridge beyond this season.
Sancho rejoined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the second half of last season following a fallout with former United manager Erik ten Hag over training performance concerns.
Man United’s financial considerations
Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently referenced Sancho’s transfer in a BBC interview, stating that the club is still paying for his £73m move from Dortmund in 2021.
“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea, and we pay half his wages, we are paying £17m to buy him in the summer,” Ratcliffe said.
Sancho’s struggles at Chelsea
Although Sancho showed early promise following his move to Chelsea, his form has since declined. The winger has managed just one assist in 18 appearances since scoring his last goal against Tottenham on December 8.
Chelsea are already planning for attacking reinforcements in the summer, with the club actively targeting another winger and a striker. Additionally, they have secured the £42m signing of Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda, set to join in 2026.
With Sancho’s current United contract running until 2026—and an option for a one-year extension—the coming months will determine whether Chelsea commit to his permanent transfer or trigger the £5m escape clause.
