The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the issuance of provisional licences for the establishment of two private universities in the country.
They include Edwin Clark University situated in Kiagbodo, Delta State, and Hezekiah University in Umudi, Imo State.
Council also urged Nigerians to desist from peddling drugs and ending up on death row.
Briefing journalists after the weekly council meeting which was chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan, Patricia Akwashiki, the minister of information, said council gave the approval following a memo tendered by the minister of education.
She said the minister of education tabled a memorandum seeking council’s ratification of the president’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional licences for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.
“The establishment of Edwin Clark University will address the inadequate access to university education and enrolment of students in excess of the carrying capacity of the universities. In addition, the establishment of the university will also address the development challenges of the Niger Delta in particular and also the wider global community as a whole”, a working document of the FEC said.
After deliberations, the council ratified the president’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional licences for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State, and Hezekiah University in Umudi, Imo State.
Once the operating licences are issued, there will be 62 private universities in Nigeria.
