The atmosphere in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Sunday evening built up to a tensed level as hundreds of alleged APC supporters marched to INEC office, Owerri, demanding the electoral body to release the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections.
According to some of the protesters, who spoke to our correspondent, they said they were not comfortable with the delay in the release of the results, alleging that the delay of the release of results could mean that PDP was planning to rig the election in connivance with security operatives.
As the protesters were marching towards the INEC office along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, policemen prevented them from gaining access to the INEC office. The policemen shot teargas canisters at the protesters, dispersing them. Meanwhile, Elias Osim, the INEC’s head of voter education and publicity, told BusinessDay on phone that the allegation was spurious.
He dismissed the claim by the protesters, saying the collation and release of results take place at three levels: the local government for the House of Representatives and Senate, and presidential at the state.
Osim said the protesters should direct their grievances at the local booths and their local councils.
